Creating a character is one of my favorite parts of the comic-making process! With each new character, I follow a step-by-step method that helps keep things clean and polished while also giving me freedom to experiment. Here’s a quick rundown of how I go from sketch to final look:
- The Blue Sketch: I always start with a rough blue sketch. It’s a simple but important step because using blue makes it easier when it’s time to ink. This layer helps me block out proportions, poses, and expressions without getting caught up in the details yet.
- Inking: Once I’m happy with the sketch, I move on to inking—this is where the character really starts to come to life. I do all my inking in Clip Studio Paint, my go-to software for digital work. I love the control it gives me with brushes, making every line as sharp and clean as I want it.
- Adding Flat Colors: After the inks are set, I lay down flat colors. I usually keep this simple at first, just choosing the basic colors to establish the palette.
- Shadows, Highlights, and Final Touches: Lastly, I add shadows, highlights, and a few subtle gradients. My goal here is to give the character some depth without overdoing it. I like to keep a bit of that classic cartoon look, so I avoid heavy blending. Just enough shading and light to give the character a pop and make them stand out!
And there you have it! From blue sketch to fully shaded character. Here’s a page I made as a test for Boom Studios a while back—just experimenting with style, color, and tone. Every character has a bit of their own flair, and it’s exciting to see them evolve from that first blue sketch to the final result!
